ZOMBIE CULTURE HITS THE FASHION SCENE

2017年02月14日

You can't really turn on the television without coming into contact with a zombie or two. That's pretty much the closest you want to get to a real zombie anyway. The Walking Dead, about the American survivors of a zombie infestation, is in the middle of its seventh record-breaking season on AMC. For years, it's been one of the most-watched shows on air. iZombie, a series about a twentysomething woman who solves crimes by eating the brains of murder victims, returns to the CW for a third season in April.

And Netflix just dropped 10 episodes of Santa Clarita Diet, a half-hour comedy starring Drew Barrymore as a real estate agent who wakes up one morning and discovers not only that she's a zombie but that she also has a craving for raw meat, preferably if it belongs to the bodies of her competitors at the agency where she and her husband (Timothy Olyphant) are, well, not exactly killing it.

Victor Fresco, the creator of Santa Clarita Diet, says that he was drawn to a series about zombies because very few rules apply to the undead: (a) They need to eat human flesh to survive. (b) Their zombie-ness can be transmitted only through bites. (c) The sole way of destroying zombies is by killing their brains. The rest—how the zombie apocalypse started, what kind of products a zombie uses in its hair, whether a zombie's diet should be gluten-free—can be made up as you go along. In fact, Fresco doesn't even like using the term "zombie." "It's derogatory," he says. "I prefer 'livingly challenged.' "

Fresco also sees zombies as a metaphor for how we interact today, in 2017. The thing about zombies is, they just care about themselves. They're all id. Being "livingly challenged," Fresco says, turns you into "the ultimate narcissist. And we're living in a time when we celebrate narcissists. People just act in ways that advance their own interests."

That's not the sole way we've become zombie-like. The onslaught of bad news and the constant click bait to read it have turned many of us into catatonics. Then there are those of us so stuck in our daily routines that we've become glued to our devices, incessantly tap-tap-tapping on the glass, not even thinking about which Instagram posts deserve an actual "heart" before hearting them.

And doesn't it seem as if everything we try to kill in our culture just finds its way back? All those reboots, all those reality stars, all those trends that just won't die, those unsquashable bugs. Some examples: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, denim jumpsuits, Bethenny Frankel, emojis, the Terminator, black lipstick, Ryan Lochte.

It's true, the fashion community and the supernatural don't always mix. Werewolves, for one, are not very respectful when it comes to their outfits—they tend to tear away their clothes. Even if they do lean toward a chic black wardrobe, vampires can be a teensy bit messy. It's especially hard to get a bloodstain out in the wash, let alone with a Tide to Go pen. The cheap cocktail dresses on these pages feature slashed-out silhouettes and see-through fabrics, but our campy interpretation aside, maybe a fashion risk here and there is a good way to snap out of a zombie-like stupor. Sometimes all it takes is a new outfit to help you wake up and see the world with fresh eyes.
